Question: Did the Fed cause the Housing Bubble? Alan Greenspan says it didn't,?
and he has "no regrets on any of the Federal Reserves policies that we initiated."
Read with CAUTION:
http://online.wsj.com/article/SB123672965066989281.html
Let's see...Greenspan slashed the federal funds target from 6.5% in January 2001 down to 1% by June 2003. After holding rates at 1% for a year, the Fed then steadily ratcheted them back up to 5.25% by June 2006, (coincidence? I think not!) It led to speculative “malinvestments,” then needing a “recession” to correct.
Alan Greenspan had the regulatory authority to prevent the 8 trillion dollar bubble, but did nothing except reprimand his critics, ignore public interest and ENCOURAGED adjustable rate mortgages.
I think he belongs in jail...how about you?
All good answers, you guys, it's going to be tough to pick a BA
jdm- I'm with you, GREED is the root of the problem
chris h- what time is the Revolution?
sagaciousness-Greenspan should be renamed "GreenSPIN" Monday morning quarterback for sure!
Answer: They certainly had a hand in it. The bottom line is there is plenty of blame to pass around.
Even worse than the low interest rates Greenspan pushed all kinds of questionable accounting during the 90's which continue still today.
For example, inflation has traditionally be calculated by summing up a standard shopping basket and calculating the differences.
Now inflation has several huge changes.
1) Oil and Food are no longer included in core inflation. This is a huge problem since they are huge inflation centers and a major driving force in the poor saving rate and foreclosure crisis because the consumer is being hit very hard by these two items
2) They include product substitution in the calculation. So rather than including Tide detergent they substitute a store brand. This results in an artificially low price which is not a fair comparison of price
3) They include geometric weighting which emphasizes price drops and reemphasizes price increases
4) They include hedonic factors. For example a new model tv has a better screen but costs the same. They cut the price of the tv by the degree of picture improvement despite the tv costing the same. The effect of this is that inflation is actually far higher than reported which means consumers are falling behind far faster than they think. Eventually, this led to foreclosures.
This is just one of the absolutely fraudulent statistics produced by the government to make politicians look good. Greenspan was behind many of them. This faulty accounting hurts us as citizens.
