Question: Can I just simply give my house back to the bank?

My husband and I want out of our mortgage. We cannot afford the payments anymore. Every dime we make goes into this stupid house. Loan modification was denied. Property values way down, tons of houses on market. We are about ready to walk away and let the mortgage co foreclose on the property. Our credit is already crappy, so what is realistically the worse thing that could happen? Would like to try a deed in lieu, but heard that isnt that common to get mortgage company to do. So i guess my question really is....what is the worst that can happen if we just say to hell with it and get out with what little money we have and start over?
