Question: Did the Democrats doom the bailout when they put Chris Dodd and Barney Frank in charge of their "CYA" team?

Several media outlets noted that Frank, as a ranking member of the committee he now chairs, told the New York Times [NYT] in 2003, “These two entities Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac are not facing any kind of financial crisis. The more people exaggerate these problems, the more pressure there is on these companies, the less we will see in terms of affordable housing.”

But Frank told the Herald yesterday that “in 2003, nobody that I knew of foresaw the crisis of subprime lending, and that is what caused this problem.”
